Since the inauguration of the current administration and Congress, many of us in IL-16 have watched with deep concern as the Executive Branch has assumed powers that rightfully belong to Congress as written in the Constitution. This includes:
Ignoring laws that hold the Executive Branch accountable to Congress for interfering with independent agencies
Dismantling federal agencies that were created by Congress
Withholding funds appropriated by Congress
Allowing private citizens, who have not been confirmed by Congress, to take on powerful roles with access to government data, state secrets, and the ability to fire federal employees
Every day that these issues go unaddressed, Congress loses more authority, bringing us closer to a Constitutional crisis. Because of this, we, the undersigned citizens of IL-16, call on Rep. Darin LaHood to hold an in-person town hall—open to the public—during the March Congressional recess or any other time he is free and in the district.
